Marvel собираются убить оригинального Мстителя, но я умоляю их этого не делать

WARNING! Spoilers for The Ultimates #10Marvel is setting up the death of a founding Мстители hero, but I really hope it doesn’t come to pass as a fan of the character. As enjoyable as Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri’s Ультимати run has been, there’s no ignoring the sinking feeling that one of the titular team’s members will soon face a tragic end now that the series’ latest issue has hinted at it.

In Ультимати #10 by Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and Travis Lanham, the heroes attack a base crawling with Red Skull gang members, and the Human Torch keeps tabs on what each member of the team is up to. While most of them are pulling their weight just fine, Giant-Man is struggling to keep up with his allies.

As Hank Pym takes longer than the Wasp to incapacitate a Red Skull member, Human Torch comments on his bad habit of hesitating in battle and says, «It’ll get him killed one day. Probably soon.»

I’ve found that Giant-Man’s shortcomings are especially noticeable when he’s juxtaposed with his wife, the Wasp, who outperforms him in every way despite their similar abilities. The Human Torch praises Janet for being a «natural» at what she does, evidenced by her swift defeat of a Red Skull once she reduces her size via Pym Particles. Unfortunately, Hank isn’t quite as successful as Janet, and he needs to hype himself up in order to get the job done. Human Torch concludes that Giant-Man has «got a big heart, but it’s just not in this kind of work.»

Hank has good intentions in his hero work, but it’s clear that he doubts himself at every turn when he should be taking action. Here, for instance, he questions whether he’s finding the right spots to incapacitate Red Skulls, whereas the Wasp has already accomplished their task without second-guessing herself at all. This difference between him and his fellow heroes has been on display since his first appearance in the series’ first issue, when he hesitates to become a hero while Janet jumps at the opportunity. The Human Torch fears that Giant-Man’s reluctance will be his downfall, and it’s hard not to share that concern.

Ultimate Giant-Man’s Origin Makes His Potential Death Even More Tragic

Hank Pym Didn’t Plan to Be a Hero in the New Ultimate Universe

Giant-Man dying would be tragic enough because of the mark it’d leave on the team — not to mention how heartbroken Janet would be to lose her husband — but the worst part is that he never wanted to be a superhero in the first place. In Ультимати #1, when Iron Lad offers Hank the chance to reclaim his hero identity that the Maker stole from him, he initially declines the offer and hides it from Janet. From his perspective, the version of himself that becomes a hero is a monster who abuses his wife, so he wants no part in that.

Of course, once Janet finds out that there’s an opportunity for her to be more than an exterminator, she seizes it immediately. As she suits up as the Wasp and flies into action, Hank is still unsure about following in her footsteps, but he eventually gives in and becomes Giant-Man. If Hank does end up dying in the field, then his decision to ignore his gut feeling and accept his fate as a superhero will have cost him his life. His blood would be on the Ultimates’ hands, that thought alone is devastating.

Giant-Man Could Be A Red Herring for The Wasp to Die In His Place

Ultimate Wasp Has Already Faced a Violent Death in the Past

With all of that being said, there’s a chance that the Human Torch’s words about Giant-Man could be intentionally misleading. Directly referencing a character’s potential death would diminish the shock value of it once it does occur, after all. Thus, there’s reason to believe that Deniz Camp is trying to steer readers in the wrong direction. Rather than killing off Giant-Man, the series could be using him to distract from the Wasp’s imminent demise. Wasp did endure an infamously gruesome death in the original Ultimate Universe’s Ультиматум event, so the rebooted version could aim to replicate that scene.

Ultimate Wasp was horrifically killed off in Ультиматум #2 by Jeph Loeb and David Finch.

I’m not sold on that theory, however, for one critical reason. As fitting as it would be to kill off Ultimate Wasp in a bait-and-switch as an homage to her other death, it would also be in poor taste, since the brutal moment is very controversial among readers. Moreover, losing Janet would be worse for Hank than death, since he didn’t want to become a hero due to his fear of hurting her. Indirectly contributing to her death by helping her become the Wasp might break him. So even if Giant-Man’s death seems more likely, it would be so much better to see both of these classic Мстители выжить.

Ультимати #10 уже доступен в Marvel Comics!
